Overthinking can be very detrimental to our mental health. Plus, overthinking is more than just a bad habit as studies show it can also take a serious toll on your well-being. Here are some of the dangers that come with overthinking.


Increases Your Chances Of Mental Illness

In 2013, the Journal of Abnormal Psychology published a study that reported dwelling on your shortcomings, mistakes, etc. can increase your risk of mental health problems. Rumination can set you up for a vicious cycle that can be hard to break as it wreaks havoc on your mental health and stability. And, as your mental health declines, your likelihood to ruminate will increase.


It Interferes With Problem-Solving

Research has shown that overthinkers actually believe that they are helping themselves by working out their problems in their heads. However, studies also show that analysis paralysis is real. By overthinking, you can interfere with problem-solving because you will be dwelling too much on the problem rather look for a solution. This can affect simple decisions such as choosing what to wear to an interview or deciding where to go for vacation. These can feel like life-or-death decisions with you are an overthinker.


It Disturbs Your Sleep

Overthinkers are probably aware of the fact that they can’t sleep because their mind will not shut off. This has been proven as studies have found that rumination and worry can lead to fewer hours of sleep and you will be more likely to toss and turn for hours before you finally fall asleep. And, sleeping later will not help as overthinking can also impair the quality of sleep. You will be less likely to fall into a deep slumber after thinking about the same thing over and over again.
